Slow Mornings, Sunshine, and a Little Mountain Adventure

By Jennifer Mejia April 22, 2026

Slow mornings, sunshine, and a little mountain adventure 🤍

We spent the day exploring Mount Index, near Index, Washington, just off Highway 2. It’s one of those easy pull-offs that quickly turns into something magical. From the trailhead, you can choose your path—Bridal Veil Falls or Lake Serene— we followed the shorter route ( about 4.2 miles total) to the falls.

Backpacks packed with snacks and water, we headed out… 5 kids deep, ages 4 to 13, ready to take on the trail.

This hike leans a little more than moderate, especially with littles. There are a few log crossings, some hand-holding moments, and a steady incline (hello, stairs). If your knees snap, crackle, pop like mine—I’d definitely bring a brace!

We took our time, stopping twice for snacks and little rest moments, just soaking it all in.

Tip: stay right at the trail splits for the falls—left will take you on the longer journey to Lake Serene.

The kids were absolute mountain goats.
The trail was a little bit of everything—mud, sand, rocks, and trees.
But that waterfall was worth every step!

Even on a sunny day, the mist from the falls is icy and refreshing, so bring a light jacket, regular sneakers work, great for this hike, but do not underestimate the snacks and water, especially with little ones, we did about 3 hours all together on this one.

These are the days we've all been waiting for.
Sun shining, messy shoes, full hearts, and time together out in the fresh Snohomish County air.

About Bridal Veil Falls

Hiking Bridal Veil Falls
Bridal Veil Falls is a stunning waterfall flowing from Lake Serene, cascading down a 100 foot rock face along the west side of Bridal Veil Creek near Mount Index.

The trail is family friendly and starts off gently along an old road through a beautiful forest of alder, maple, and evergreens. Around 1.5 miles in, you’ll reach a fork. Stay right to head toward the falls.

As you climb the final stretch with stairs and rocky sections, you’ll be rewarded with an up close view of the waterfall. Kids especially love standing beside the rushing water and feeling the cool mist as it pours down like a veil.

This is a popular hike, so expect crowds on summer weekends, but the views are absolutely worth it.
